"My question to the wood turners is, do you glue a spacer
block to the wood that you are turning and screw your faceplate to that
spacer? If you do, what kind of glue are you using for that?"

I use spacer blocks screwed to my faceplates quite often. I usually use hot
glue or regular lathe double sided tape, not carpet tape.
Hot glue can be removed more easily than most any other kind. A blow
with a mallet usually will dislodge it. With double sided tape, I usually screw
the spacer block on my faceplate and then put on enough double sided tape
strips to pretty much cover the spacer block. Then, peal off the covering on the
back of the tape, put the piece to be turned on that. Clamp the two together
for at least an hour. Many times, it is something I do at the end of the day
and just leave it overnight.
If I am turning a rather heavy piece, I will usually screw the wood
directly to the faceplate.
    Hope this helps.
