First carefully pare down all the punched area until  the depressions are 
virtually gone . Then  sand the whole carving very  thoroughly. 
  Now, using small paint brush and boiling water soak all the  punched area. 
Within minutes the warts will be seen to rise.
 Better test on same kind of wood before you do on your  project.
