I see potential for trouble in your relationship with this friend. The 
phrase "don't shoot the messenger" comes to mind.

With the discrepancy between HIS estimate and YOURS being so large, 
allow me to say that your friend should be the person who checks out 
the price of these turning tools on eBay. If he sees the price for 
himself, he will be in a better position to adjust his price closer to 
the market price.
