Bill Judt
World Wide Woodcarver Mailing List

Dear Bill,

I enjoyed our telephone conversation yesterday afternoon.   Thank you
for your most gracious offer of posting this a note concerning my
project to your universe of wood carvers!

To the wood carvers, please allow this letter to introduce me. My name
is Steve Marsel. I’m a commercial photographer involved in a public
service project for the Pan Mass Challenge www.pmc.org The PMC is a
charitable bicycle event in its 26th year that raises money for the
Jimmy Fund, the fundraising arm of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
Last year the PMC, through its 4400 riders, donated twenty million
dollars through its two-day, 192-mile ride.

My specific project is providing photographs for a brochure honoring 25
riders, representative of the thousands, who ride each year. The
pictures feature the riders in circumstances that allude to their
careers or hobbies when they aren’t raising money for cancer. The
brochure and a selection of very large (44” X 77”) color prints will be
unveiled at a PMC event at the JFK library in June. I have provided a
link to a PDF file on my website that shows the brochure in progress.
That link is http://www.stevemarselstudio.com/PMC-1.pdf

All but two photographs for the project are completed. One of the
subjects I have left to photograph is Karen Axelrod. Karen is the
author of Watch It Made in the U.S.A.: A Visitor’s Guide to the
Companies that Make Your Favorite Products.
http://www.factorytour.com/ In her book, there is a section that
highlights the New England Carousel Museum.

A carousel would offer a colorful, unique location for her photograph.
We would like to portray Karen on a carousel “bike” wearing her bike
gear. The need arises to have a bike carved and painted in the style of
the horses on the carousel.  We would shoot Karen on a horse at the
actual carousel for angle and light reference, then shoot her again
here in my studio in Somerville, Massachusetts.   We would then
electronically composite the two photographs so it appeared as though
Karen was actually riding on a carved bicycle on a real carousel. We
have done this before and had great success!

Each person who will receive this brochure raised at least double of
the PMC’s expectations. This brochure will serve as a giant thank you
to them for their continued fundraising in years to come. We’re hoping
there is a talented wood carver out there who can share in our vision
to show gratitude to the thousands of people who have individually made
significant strides in a cure for cancer.

We look forward to answering any questions you have concerning this
photo shoot and hearing any additional comments on the project.

Respectfully,

Steve Marsel
