[Woodcarver] Two Cherry tools

Hi Steve,

Hirsch and Two Cherry are the same tool with different stickers on the
handle. The factory and suppliers will tell you that and if you check with a
micrometer you will see they are the same. I'm guessing that 90 % of what
they sell is Two Cherry and only 10% is Hirsch so Hirsch isn't as popular.
I'm not positive but I believe Lamp may come out of the same factory made to
the same high quality standards.

I only used Swiss for the first years of my carving career until I found
Hirsch/Two Cherry. I hit my tools hard with a large mallet and found the
Hirsch/Two Cherry to be a much stiffer tool. They have no vibration or buzz
stinging my hand like the Swiss did when I hit them hard. The metal is about
20% thicker with the Hirsch/Two Cherry than the Swiss, which is a plus for
stiffness but a drawback for sharpening because you must remove 20% more
stock.

The Swiss have Ash handles and the Hirsch/Two Cherry/Lamp are a harder more
durable Hornbeam.

Highland Hardware (800 241 6748) have a Hirsch 12-tool Boxed Carving Set
that I believe he is looking for (item 129921) for $309.99 in their Spring
Summer 2005 catalog.

Lately, my tool of choice is Stubai because it is close to the thinner metal
thickness of the Swiss but maintains the stiffness of the Hirsch/Two Cherry.
It also has the more durable wooden handles but as an added bonus has an
internal ferrule in the handle as well as a nice large metal shoulder to
distrubute the force. For toughness and edge holding qualities I believe the
first is Stubai, than Hirsch/Two Cherry/Lamp and third is the Swiss with
good edge holding qualities but lacking in toughness.

Hi All,
I have a question from a friend in Florida who does not have a computer. He
is wanting to buy a set of Two Cherry's carving tools that come in a set of
12. From what I understand, he said the set runs about the $500 mark so my
question is, can this set be found cheaper anywhere. Another question I
have is what would be so special about Two Cherry other than one's personal
preference? I may have put my foot in my mouth here so I apologize in
advance to all Two Cherry's tool lovers.

Thanks for the help....

Best Regards,

Steve Lankerd Sr
