Hi Steve,

The difference between the hard wood and soft wood should be no problem if
you allow the top panel to float in a frame. The expansion of the two woods
will not be matched even if they were both hardwood so it would have to be a
floating panel anyway.

I would try to use a wood that stands up better to outdoor weather than
basswood. Mahogany, white oak, catulpa, cypress, cedar, are some woods more
durable outdoors.
