Hi Maura,
A floating panel is where the actual panel is not attached to the door but
supported in a frame. The size of the frame has enough room to allow the
panel to expand and contract. It would be like a picture frame around the
panel. It is called a floating panel because the panel actually floats in
the frame with the frame attached to the door.
