            I have carved some large carvings in the past with White Pine. I
used Mapp Gas it burns quite abit hotter than Propane. In some areas you can
burn the wood deeper and then wire brush it to give it a sandblasted look
the soft wood in between the sap lines will burn deeper leaving a raised
grain. Around the face I just shaded the nose and then steel wool. Be
careful burning it will take small detail away its like anything else trail
and error to get the texture desired. I burn the hair on some of my small
carvings too it lets the grain show thru after I apply a finish.
