[Woodcarver] Carving Oak

so true I take and get all the free wood that a person is willing to give up not matter what type it is if its to hard for carving then I will use it on the lathe.

Hi Doug,

Carving oak is not too bad, especially white oak.

However even if you decide not to carve it, oak lumber is always a good item 
to trade for some other types of wood. If you have the space I suggest you 
never turn down any good wood.

A friend has just told me they have taken down 6 - 60 ft oak trees.They 
offered me to pick some out to carve .I am still getting to know which woods 
I can work with.I can't afford to buy all the wood I would like,and like to 
take advantage of found wood whenever possible .I like to carve faces and 
woodspirits,and wonder if this oak would be worth getting.

Your experience would be much appreciated, Doug N
