[Woodcarver] wood choice

I have a chance to pick up some 8/4 wood on Wensday.  My funds are really limited this pay but with this dealer it is catch as catch can so I do want to get a couple of pieces off him.  He has walnut, 8/4 by 8" to 10" wide for $6.80 a board foot and African Mahogany, 8/4 by about 12" wide for $6.55 a board foot.

Two questions.  Are his prices decent?  If you had to choose one or the other what would you rather carve?  I have carved black walnut before but have never tried african mahogany so thought the list might be able to help me out.
