Hi Ron,

I feel both Stubai and Phiel are good quality tools. This has been my
experience with using both brands for the last bunch of years along with
other brands such as 2 Cherry, Hirsch, Lamp, Henry Taylor and Buck.

Stubai are hardened to a 59 Rockwell. Phiel are hardened to a 62 Rockwell.
Both are hardened from tip to shank. Phiel has an ash handle which is not as
durable as the Hornbeam handles of Stubai. Stubai full size is the only
chisel I know of that has double ferrule one on the tool steel and the other
internal in the handle. Even though the Stubai is not as hard as the Phiel I
find it to be stiffer without adding much metal thickness. Also I find the
Stubai holds the edge better. The Phiel tools are more prone to chipping
especially with the design they use on their V-tools. There isn't much
difference in the sharpening time between the two but perhaps the Stubai
takes a little longer because of the slight increase in metal thickness.

I do feel the Phiel is a good quality tool. I've spent many happy hours
using them. Today my number one choice for quality is the Stubai. I really
experienced what Stubai advertises," Sharpen Less, Carve More."

I am not a dealer for these or any other tools.
