Hi Peter!
This seems like a funny question but... do your schools have a wood shop
type class? We do here. Last year one of my former students that started
carving with me in 8th grade, took wood shop and took her carving tools in
to class to work on projects for class that could include some carving on
them. She entered a cardinal in the regional and district competitions this
year and won a 1st and 2nd place. Several of the kids in her class have
been asking if they could learn how to carve also. We've been trying to
come up with a day to do so but between their schedules and mine it hasn't
happened yet. I also have 5 boys and a girl from the middle school that
come to my home to carve.
You could see about forming a club at the school after school. Try the
boy scouts or a similar group of kids. Churches might also have a group
interested or could become interested. The biggest thing about the middle
school boys is they are easily distracted when there are too many of them so
we carve on 2 different days. It works better that way.
Even talking to a lot of parents about the opportunity for their child
can get some in and then the kids will get the others.
