I am currently researching jointers, planers and bandsaws for relief panels.
Does anyone have any recommendations?
Delta rockwell, Delta and Delta. get the biggest you can afford and get the
extension too. It is my experience that no matter what size tool you buy
which will be okay, for your next project you will need the bigger size. For
jointer, minimum 6", for planer minimum 18" for bandsaw Min 14" with riser,
18" better.
Also, do you have any recommendations for a good woodcarving magazine?
Well lets see now.........hmmm...............Carving Magazine put out by the
Whillock Family is my first answer. But it depends on what you're looking
for.
Chip chats (put out by The national woodcarvers association) is lots of
pics of carvings to drool over, lots of coverage of woodcarving shows. some
patterns, no real projects, things about the woodcarving world. Some columns.
Promotes woodcarving in general and accepts all club items. Nice sized issues.
No advertisements 14 dollars a year(which includes membership), 6 issues
Carving magazine and woodcarving illustrated both feature lots of patterns
and projects, lots of beginner and intermediate projects, some advanced
projects and techniques, some classical, americana, folk, and realistic carving.
lots of glossy carving photos. Coverage of bigger shows, club and show info,
book reviews, feature carvers, regular columns, advertisements, both have good
professional carvers inputting. Both are great resources, though my
preference is for Carving Magazine as the internet lists have a lot of input and it
is a young magazine still evolving with lots of great people guiding it. And
I like the column on marketing in it. Woodcarving Illustrated also puts out
special issues concentrating on a particular subject. I suspect Carving
magazine will also eventually. both $20 a year/ 4 issues i believe
Woodcarving Magazine a UK magazine much like the two above, slightly more
intermediate and advanced projects and techniques, more classical and
architectural slant. Overseas mailing makes it a bit pricey but it is a great
resource also. Also LOL I don't like that all the prices in the advertisements are
in british units as I can never figure out if the prices are better than
ours quick enough. almost $40 a year, 6 issues I believe.
