Sorry folks,
I hit the wrong key and sent it off before I had quite finished.
I'm just small potatoes, but I am often surprised at what brings me
business.
Recently, I made 4 eight foot tent poles and 4 six foot poles for a
Civil War Re-enacter. For whatever reason, she wanted them made from oak. I
couldn't convince her otherwise. I didn't argue, I made what she wanted. They had
to be historical so they were octagonal and tapered from top to bottom with
4" steel pins 5/16th in diameter in the top for the grommet holes in the tent
canvas.
I haven't had any tent blow away with my poles. No big secret, I use 18"
steel rod and put it 14" into the poles with 4" protruding. Many poles that
I have seen have only been about 2-4" into the pole.
My point, a re-enactor saw my work, was told what I did and told a
friend of hers. As a result of my tent poles, I have been contacted by a large
commercial pottery to make churn dashers for their upscale one and two gallon
pottery churns. These are made from walnut and are turned on my lathe. Just
got my first order yesterday and they want more for next year.
I agree what I do has a larger market, but I am so often amazed where my
business comes from. Yes, even carving.
Don't feel bad, digest it, think about it and decide what you need to do
to change course, direction, etc.
Sincerely,
Tom
