I recently finished a set of bi-fold doors that have a waterfall
carved on them. After studying photographs I decided to carve the
falling parts of the water smooth and to add a flowing texture around
the rocks. The water should stand proud of the rocks to a certain
degree to get the feel of flowing it over the rocks. From past
experience, I've found it necessary to practice restraint in adding
too much detail to the water. A big part of the look of water is the
reflection of light. Very difficult to imply in unpainted wood. This
is probably not an issue with a painted sign but my past failures at
creating convincing water led me to try adding color to the water.
I not completely happy with the result but it's my best attempt yet
at carving a waterfall.
Here's a link to a photo of the completed doors.

Be sure to look at the incredible nature inspired art jewelry hand
fabricated by my wife, Karen Olsen Ramsey. It's worth the time to
take a look!
