Hi Dianne -
You may find all you want to know about the World Wide Woodcarver
Exchanges at carverscompanion.com
Once there click on the W3E link, then the Secret Pal exchange link.
While you are on the Carvers Companion web site, be sure to check
out the current and back issue of Woodcarver Online Magazine.
As for your crumbly cottonwood bark, a fireplace may be the best
solution, particularly if it also contains bugs - you don't really
want them in the house.
Carve On!
