Don't know about a walking stick but I had a nursery for over ten years and
it is easy to braid small ficus plants and then grow them until it is six feet.
You can also put a dowel between the loops of the braid and keep the braids
open. The ficus is the only thing I have used but I'm sure you could use other
small trees. Just make sure it is fast growing.
