Dave,

Why not remove enough wood to "flag in" a durchman.....No, NOT
Jan.....Seriously, cut out a small section of the beard, carefully fit and glue
in a firm piece of matching wood (matching in both color, grain direction and
specie) and recarve the added piece to match the carving. This way, you have a
fine glue line t odeal with, easily hidden in the carving design, rather than a
glob of putty to color.

"Flagging in a dutchman" is an old term used to repair surface defects in wood,
particularly veneer work, but it would apply to this as well.
