Have you considered shoe cremes? These are wax-based cremes with
pigment in them. They apply with a brush (tooth brush, artist's
brush) and buff beautifully with a bristle brush or cotton cloth.
Since the shoe creme lays on the surface you will have no problem
with drying. Dark colors can be applied next to light colors, as the
first layer applied resists the next coat placed on top of it.
If you make a mistake, simply surface carve the wood to expose fresh
wood and make the correction.
I use either TANA or Meltonian products.
