Thank you Patti, I do have a Rockler close by. It is a long story as to why
carving. I remember my grandmother carving and need a way to relax and this
seems to be relaxing to me. I have tried a little and I am hooked. I also
want to put these on my Christmas list.

Thank you again,

Kathy

Kathy,

As a previous answer stated, a knife. That being said, go to a store..in
your area Rockler or Woodcraft and hold the knife in your hand. Get a good
fit. Most knives handles are too large for my hand and I have them taken
down to fit so fatigue is not a factor. Buy fewer tools but good tools.
Ones that will hold an edge. What is your interest in carving? It is
impossible to guide you not knowing if you intend to use large mallet tools
or carve relief or chip carve. Most newbies start on smaller pieces in the
round so a good small set of palm tools and a good knife should get you off
and running. There are so many sources of good tools, shows always have
vendors and there are many here on the list and on the web. Take a class.
Our club offers beginning classes and provides the tools for the carver.
After a day of carving and trying different tools the new carver has a much
better idea what will work for him/her.

Hope this helps.

Patti
