Hi Doug,

My answer is my experience only...have no great expertise. My bench tops are made of 1 3/8" HDO Plywood. I had a source so it made sense.

Extremely strong. Came with an overlay that is resistant and wipebale for most things. I routed the edges and put an oil finish on the edges and lightly over the top. I love mine but scientifically I couldn't tell you. It is 13 ply Doug Fir.

Formulated to be used in forms for pouring concrete walls. We have a half dozen or more shooting benches on our land that have been out in the weather for a decade and still going strong except for the squirrel chews. They seem to like the bonding agent or ???

Pics on my Picture Trail album on New Shop Photos (see link below in my signature)..

Hope this doesn't muddy the water a little more for you

Howdy All !

I am thinking of building a new bench top from KD Doug fir.
I know Bill suggests hard wood for the tops because they wear well, but old Chris Pye says that soft is better for absorbing the blows.
Any thoughts or experiences either way ??? Love to here them
Thanks, Doug Nielsen....................
