Hi Doug,
Only my opinion, but get the cheapest wood you can and then cover
it with a piece of MDF. Some hardwoods are hard, Maple, Oak, etc,
but they still are not impervious to saws, chisels, etc. The MDF
is smooth and cheap and you can replace it every few months
without breaking the bank. If you have a good source for Douglas
Fir, use it. Southern Yellow Pine is a softwood but is very
hard.
