Doug,
Everybody seems to be making assumptions based on the name.
Hardwoods aren't always hard and Softwoods aren't always soft. Some
of the softwoods are quite a bit harder than some of the hardwoods. The
difference between them is basically whether the tree is deciduous or
not. If it is, it's classified as a hardwood and if it's not as a softwood.
Southern White Pine is exceptionally hard. Balsa is quite soft. Both are
the other kind <G>.
