Hi Richard,
Welcome to the "Woodcarver" list. Notice it's woodcarver not woodcarving. If you have a specific question ask away. People here are always willing to answer questions. As for the chatter, that's part of who we are. We like to know a bit about each other. Some are professional carvers, many are hobbiests, but we share a concern for each other as well as a love of carving. We happen to believe that's what it all about. I've seen the "please limit to carving" type of comments off and on for over 10 years.
So pull up a chair and sit around the computer(modern worlds answer to fire) get out a knife. Enjoy a bit of carving a bit of good conversation. Some of that conversation might actually include how to information. To be sure some of the "how to" gets into the conversation ask a question or two.
