Hi Alan,
Welcome to the wonderful world of chip carving!
It's a great skill to learn. I've been carving for over 20 years and still love it.
I've taught many people how to chip carve and can probably offer you some
help. I work with Wayne Barton and sell his materials as they are the best you'll find.
Proper technique and proper practice is the key.
I'd suggest the same materials I used when I first started.
1. Chip Carving DVD - you can watch this instruction over and over until
you've got it down.
2. Complete Guide to Chip Carving - in this book you'll find helpful tips
along with layout and design ideas.
Both items are available at http://www.mychipcarving.com/books.htm
If you have questions and would like to talk, feel free to call me at 866-444-6996.
I'll add your name to my free Chip Carving Chat letter I send out occasionally. I think you'll find it inspiring along with providing you with instruction and some free patterns.
The My Chip Carving Free Pattern Archive is available at: http://mychipcarving.com/archive.htm
I'm adding instruction to my website and have the first tutorial on proper technique for holding the knife at http://www.mychipcarving.com/chipcarvingmn.html
Happy carving!
Marty
