As to what paints to use, that is pretty much individual preferance. I use
artists oil paints thinned with oderless mineral spirits. I also use some
acrylic paints like the ones you can buy in the plastic bottles at walmart
or any hobby store. It depends on what I am painting and if I want the
paint to soak in or not. So I usually use oil on wood and acrylic on
non-porous media. Lots of this is trial and error to find what works for
you. Acrylic dries fast and oil dries very slow, some paints (jo-sonja) may
be better for air brushes etc. A good approach is to talk with others at
your club and see what they do or talk to carvers at shows that have a style
that you want to emulate.
Now a question of my own. I want to try turning wood (bowls) on a lathe,
does anyone know of a forum where I can learn what turning tools I need?
What are the diffrence between turning tools and carving chisels - I would
(wood?) think the diffrences would be significant but I know nothing about
turning.
