There was a method in on of the woodcarving magazines a few years back where a carving was sprayed with matte finish lacquer, then some carving was coloured with water based, fine pointed marker then this was oversprayed with more mate lacquer.  I've used this on plaques and the markings are permanent (for 3 years at least) and if you get a set of markers, each signer can pick a favourite colour.
