My question is, I don't want it to run or bleed through the wood when everyone signs it so what would be the best thing to sign it with? The blank is basswood & I was thinking of using Bill's SSW method to finish it.

Sounds to me the best way to sign it is with a woodburner pen
Colwood tip " MC "is very suitable for that purpose
It is a silver tip and writes very good on low temperature
