Hi,

I have completed two of Bill Judt's reliefs using Yellow Birch. It is much
harder to carve than basswood. Some hand carving can be done but a mallet
makes it much easier to do. I found the finished project came out very
nice. My carvings are the wolf relief, and God Bless Our Home relief in my
Carvings 1 and Carvings 2 picturetrail albums . I used Bill's sealer and
wax finish. Hang in there you won't be disappointed. Maybe Bill or someone
else could tell us the difference in hardness of the two woods. I've never
used White Birch so don't have any idea how much softer/harder it is than
Yellow Birch.

Hi all,

I'm new to this and still learning. Have a question for anyone who would
care to respond. I'm getting ready to start a relief carving. The plans
suggested I use white birch but I was unable to get it. I purchased and
made my panel out of yellow birch. So far all I have done is use the
router to get a few of the depths right. Haven't started to use the
chisels yet. What do you think? Is it worthwhile to try and finish it off
or not. I know that this is a pretty hard-wood. Any opinions on if I
should try to continue or not? I realize that I should of probably
attempted something more simple with a chunk of basswood to start but what
the heck, I just dove in. Did I bite off more than I can chew here or
what?
