Thanks Bill,

That is helpful explanation. I would like to try some White Birch sometime
but I didn't have much choice when I bought mine. All they had was Yellow
Birch.

Dave:

About the two birches - white and yellow - They are similar in grain and
reflective properties, but differ in weight (density) and color. Yellow
birch is heavier. White birch has the color of a brick of butter. Yellow
birch has the color of light liquid honey. Both woods catch the light and
throw it around beautifully.

Both woods take a clean shiny cut with sharp tools, and hold excellent
detail. And both woods take an excellent finish.

Be clear on this, however: there are variations in each species of birch.
Some white birches are harder than yellow - I'm not sure why - and some
yellow birches are virtually the same color as white birches. Be sure you
know what you are buying and paying for.

Hope this helps,

Blessings and Peace,

Bill

Hi,

I have completed two of Bill Judt's reliefs using Yellow Birch. It is much
harder to carve than basswood. Some hand carving can be done but a mallet
makes it much easier to do. I found the finished project came out very
nice. My carvings are the wolf relief, and God Bless Our Home relief in my
Carvings 1 and Carvings 2 picturetrail albums . I used Bill's sealer and
wax finish. Hang in there you won't be disappointed. Maybe Bill or someone
else could tell us the difference in hardness of the two woods. I've never
used White Birch so don't have any idea how much softer/harder it is than
Yellow Birch.
