Although I have yet to get to my sign making projects, I would use Maple as it has a fine grain but is hard enough to ensure lettering has clean, crisp lines. As far as wood treatments I would consider "Lifetime Wood Treatment", which you can read about at the following link: http://www.valhalco.com/
