Well, I tell ya, lil' Joe ... besides performing radical lifesaving brain
surgery, everything else seems pale compared to your full platter!
That drawing class sounds like fun ... gotta do that some day.
I hope them Texans with deep pockets pull out some of that cash for one of your
great mantles.
Have a safe and profitable trip.

Knock knock. It sure is quiet on the List.
What's everyone doing? I know that Jan's carving and Big Dog is working on
the new catalogue. What's the rest of you doing?
I'm getting ready for a Pastel Portrait class here at my shop all day today
and tomorrow. D. Anne Jones is coming from Indiana to teach the class. There
are 11 of us, including my apprentices, who are taking the class.
I believe if one becomes good at seeing and good at drawing their
woodcarving potential in limitless. They will be able to create their own
patterns and better visualize the finished product before they begin. The
ability to see and draw in the foundation of all visual art. Anyone can
learn to draw.
Anne's work is awesome ( http://www.ufo-tech.com/anne ). Her technique is
that she doesn't do any measuring or mapping out the space. She begins with
one single feature, such as the left eye, completing it before she slowly
expands to the next small adjacent detail. She completes each detail before
she expands to the next adjacent detail.
I've always drawn by first mapping out the area, lightly sketching in where
the features go and then gradually finish a grouping of features all
together. I thought that I would try Anne's technique. It was a little scary
at first not knowing exactly where the features would fall, only working on
the one feature until it was finished before doing the next 1/2 inch square
next to it. I was not in my comfort zone. However the results were amazing.
I've never had such good luck at capturing the character. Anne works off of
photos. I think that her technique works much better from photos then live
models. I'm excited about this class to see if it makes as big a difference
in my apprentices drawing ability as it did in mine. Today we're going to
work with just charcoal and tomorrow we'll be working in pastels.
Monday I pack and get ready to leave early Tuesday morning for the Country
Thunder USA show in Texas.

I'll be carving a bed for the Touch Of The West (
http://www.touchofthewest.com/ ) during the 4-day show. I've doubled the
prices on my mantels and plaques because I'm splitting the sale with the
store. I don't know how close we'll be to the main stage but when we're
working the Country Thunder show in Wisconsin we are the closest tent to the
stage. It is a 4-day fun party with a new act on stage every 2 hours. It's a
nice free week-long vacation for Sharon and I that could be profitable.
What's happening with you all?
