Sometimes I feel like I slow down a bit in the summer but looking back on
things I think I have stayed rather busy carving-wise............Well, this
summer I attended the Newr, did a tramp art box, scrimshaw medallion and a
dennis thorton caricature of a chickenhawk, all things that I had never tried
before. I think they all came out pretty well. while I liked the tediousness of
the scrimshaw work(I guess due to the historical aspects), the tramp art box
got to me and I had to struggle thru it. I guess it is for the same reasons
that me and chip carving don't agree..... and have been teaching classes 2x a
week for the nyc parks dept, going on my second year now. we do all types of
things, whatever my students wish to tackle and I give guidance and prepare
their wood and cutouts, teach them sharpening and advise them as to their
techniques and finishing.

I have also been working with an antique wholesaler and currently am
restoring an 1840 gothic table in walnut which I will put together a pictoral of
when finished, should be sometime this or next week, involved lots of gothic
tracery carvings to replace missing parts, recently finished up restoring a
mahogany 100 year old table with classical shells, leaves, lions heads, lions
paw feet. That came out great!!! Keeping some old carvers work alive for the
next generations to enjoy is very inspiring and educational for me.

On the more personal front, I recently came across a wonderful pic of my
great-great-grandfather circa 1900 in which he is wearing a top hat, long
double-breasted overcoat with chest medal, cravat, wingtips and leaning on a cane
and have just started an 18x10" relief portrait in walnut. This one is near
and dear to my heart and hope to do it justice.
