Hi Dave,
I have carved aspen, but not chip carved it. I expect it would be ok to chip carve because it is fairly good to carve. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best, I would rate aspen to be 7.5. I carve a lot of aspen furniture, logs and slabs.
I have found aspen to be as soft or a little softer then basswood. I would expect, as with any soft wood, your tools need to be extremely sharp to chip carve aspen.

Hi Joe,
Did anyone ever chip carve aspen?
I'm working on a love spoon, but I'm not in love with it because it is in aspen, which I discovered is much harder than basswood or butternut. I was told that it was fairly easy to carve, but nooooo. I have the bowl complete but the handle is flat in order to chip carve a design into it.
Thanks,
