Big Grin :) Love the title to this thread.

Dennis,

This list does go through times of just chatting and times of intense debate and
times of very open sharing. It really depends on what questions or ideas have
been posted for feedback.

Please bare in mind that we have heard everything we have to say ... :) but all
of us are just waiting for a chance to say it again or to look at any idea from
a new perspective. So as a beginner please ask whatever questions you might
have. Everyone of us was a newbie to carving and the list at one time or other.
All of us had a pocket full of questions.

Also, please know that once you join the list you are automatically signed up
for the 'good old boys' group status :)

If you want to start a great thread some of the heavy response questions I have
seen are:

Do you sand your carving or do you believe that every carving should be pristine
because of the sharpness of your tools?

What finish is best for a carving ... linseed oil, polyurethane, varnish ... ?

Do you always wear carving gloves?

Why basswood is not a good carving wood compared to Fill-in-the-blank ?

Is power carving, working from a rough out cheating, using someone's pattern or
working from book instructions cheating ?

What safety tips do you have to share ?

Should beginner's start with a beginner's (inexpensive) carving set or go right
to the $50 each tools ?

How do you brace your carving ... bench dogs, vice, bench hook ... ?

Where can I find info on Fill-in-the-blank ... as wood spirit carving, copyright
info, new carving books ... ?

What's the dumbest thing you have done while carving ... besides stuck a round
gouge into the palm of your hand ?

So there is a small list, from memory, in no particular order that have started
some great long term debates on the list. Pick one that interests you and get
it started or use these ideas to start your own particular question.

Standard Disclaimer: Just my opinion, that and 50 cents won't buy you coffee at
Micky D's. Please take what you like and throw the rest away.

I'm new to the list and I sure understand the guy's dribble comment. I'm
looking for good input and information on carving....I'm kinda new at
it...and I'm really debating if this is the best thing for me. I get about
10 to 15 e-mails a day from woodcarving and so far in my limited experience
80% plus of them have been a combination of chat about some computer thing
someone needs help with, please make a donation and this type of dribble
talk.

Don't mean to be overly critical, but if you wanna recruit new folks to your
list, take it from me, a new guy I don't see much that makes me wanna stay.
Looks great if you're one of the good ole boys or girls who knows everybody,
buy don't do much for us new ones.

Dennis a guy with nothing to sell ya or with a web site...just like
carving.
