[Woodcarver] Veterans' Eagle Head Cane Project

Glad to- Larry.
In order to keep a certain uniformity to the canes we have very strict guidelines which we must follow or the canes will not be given to the soldiers but auctioned off for funds to buy more materials. It makes sense- else the soldier who got a 'better' cane by a 'better' carver could feel that he got a 'better' gift- while one who got a 'lesser' cane could feel slighted.
They also designed it to be functional and not decorative, so we couldn't get too realistic. It was difficult to keep within the guidelines- and I may have added a tiny little touch here and there to make it 'mine'-LOL- but I think it will pass in a dark alley.
At first I didn't think it was a good idea, but now I understand their rationale. It is a great project and worthy of anyone's time and energy. Just think of the time and energy these people have exerted for us.

I was very proud last night to see that one of the military men in
attendance at
the President's State of the Union Address was holding one of 'OUR'
canes. I
could hardly believe my eyes. There was no doubt that it was the very
same
design that many carvers all over the States have been carving for our
wounded
soldiers. That one seemed to have a basket-weave pattern on the shaft-
which is
not allowed in Texas- but it could just as well have been the one I
made, and I
was proud that it was on display for the world to see.

These are links to web sites about the project- but I think most states
must
have coordinators for each place. There isn't much anyone can do
nowadays for
problems in this world, but this seems to be a project all good carvers
can do
to tell our military men and women that we appreciate their sacrifice.
