Thank you everyone for the replies.
No my post was not intended to be inflamatory but to promote reasonable 
discussion .
If you read it again you will see that I am taking my guidence from end 
users of walking sticks ( I have been making them now for 20 years)and 
wondered if the same applied to the Vets.
If as you  said Byron they are only used on special occasions then I can 
understand the colours.
