I doubt if Peter really meant to offend anyone by his remarks about painting verses not painting the canes.  I've made quite a few canes out of either diamound willow or yew wood limbs and would use an oil finish and sometimes high light the carvings with some stain in the shadowed areas.  The oil finish probably didn't look as good as a varnish but was easier to maintain.  I think it's just a matter of personal preference.  I'm also a vet (USMC 1966-1970.)
