Bill,
Both you and I have written books with patterns in them. I'm sure you'd agree that copying to learn is a time-tested technique. But to me copying is like using training wheels on a bike. It's a perfectly fine way to learn, but I haven't really taught my students to carve until they can "take off the training wheels."
Your suggestions on how to do that are very useful.
In reading the posts, it's great that so many teachers on this list are helping their students learn how to move away from copying and into original work.
