[Woodcarver] Water Based Stains

Hi Hans,
I failed to mention which alcohol to mix to lower the viscosity. (Viscosity
is a measurement of resistance to flow.) The alcohol to mix should be wood
(methyl) alcohol which is about half the viscosity of water. Grain (Ethyl)
alcohol is about the same as water and Isopropyl is about 2 times higher
than water (all measurements taken at room temperature).
This brings up an interesting question about which alcohol to mix 50/50 with
water to spray on your wood so it will carve easier? Wood (methyl) alcohol
will give the deepest penetration, which is what you're looking for, in
wood. It is also a poison so don't drink it. LOL
Steve, I don't know if you sent this, but thank you for this information? "
If you want depth, you might want to give dyes a try. I use TransFast
water-soluble dyes and General Finishes pre-mixed water-based dyes. Both
provide clear color changes and I just love them." I love General Finishes
products, which is a small company in New Berlin, Wisconsin. I have been
there and called them often when I have questions regarding finishes. I feel
dumb not knowing that they had a water-based dye stain. A few years ago they
gave me a bunch of samples to try and there were no dye stains in those
samples. General Finishes is a good company and very knowledgeable about any
type of finishes.

Thank you Larry, Joe and Steve. I will have to experiment with some of
these ideas.
