Hi Maura,
My wife and I have been carving for four years. We go to the Suwanee
(Florida) Roundup every spring. We like to stay with an instructor for three or
four days instead of switching to a new one each day. It helps if
instructors have sample carvings in various stages of completion that we can use as
examples. I would like to learn to do grapes and leaves.
I have a piece of titanium in my backbone that makes it impossible for me to
stand for extended periods of time, so I need a stool to lean on if I work
on an elevated surface. However, if forewarned I could bring one. Similarly,
if long-handled tools are needed, we could bring some if warned in advance.
We prefer instructors who tell us what to do and demonstrate on a
separate piece of wood rather than working directly on our carvings. My wife
says, "Use your words."

One solution to the time issue is to do an exercise in class, focusing
on the main elements of the carving, rather than trying to complete a fully
executed work in the limited time available.
I see by the TV that you all have been having some challenging
weather up there. Try teaching in Florida some spring.
