[Woodcarver] What wood would you suggest?

Good Day Folks,

 

It's in my mind to try to carve a crucifix, notice I say try!!

 

I have some good butternut for the cross, but am tossing over whether or not
to try to carve the corpus or buy one.  If I carve it, what wood would you
suggest to use since the butternut is light.  A darker, good carving wood is
what I'm after.

 

What would you suggest?
