[Woodcarver] What wood would you suggest?

Hi Barney,

If you're looking for something dark, black walnut is good for carving if the hardness doesn't scare you off. Basswood is soft and takes a dark stain very well.

Good Day Folks,

It's in my mind to try to carve a crucifix, notice I say try!!

I have some good butternut for the cross, but am tossing over whether or not to try to carve the corpus or buy one. If I carve it, what wood would you suggest to use since the butternut is light. A darker, good carving wood is what I'm after.

What would you suggest?

Barney Barnhardt
