Hello,
I just found this email list during the past week and was happy to
see it. I've done a variety of wood working over the years. Got me
through college and grad school. I'm basically a whittler who enjoys
picking up a piece of wood and carving things for family or friends.
I did work for a scale miniature furniture company a number of years
ago and found I had a knack for carving miniature Queen Anne chair
legs and miniature duck decoys by eye. I enjoy making static ship
models of 18th and 19th century naval vessels and am investigating
doing some miniature ship figureheads..
I recently stumbled into chip carving and have been attempting to
learn the techniques from books and DVDs. Just worked up to my first
simple practice rosette (which looks like a first attempt), but I got
hooked pretty quickly on the variety of things that can be done using
the techniques of chip carving with relatively few tools. Hope there
are some others on the list who are also interested in chip carving
and willing to discuss it. I'm sort of working backwards with wood.
Did most of my early miniature work in cherry and walnut and now
using basswood and other softer woods.
Wood carving is a great diversion from my job which is working in IT
as a systems manager, etc. at a nearby university. Definitely a good
change of pace.
Regards,
