I would start with a chainsaw myself.

Actually I have carved several pine type trees lately for a miniature
carving seane I working on. I took a 1/2? inch dowel and used by table disk sander
to tapper it from about the 2 1/4" inch mark and then mixed the paint color
I wanted with snow tex and they came out pretty good. I also turned a 4x4 on
the lathe and did the same paint job and it looks pretty good also.

What's the BEST way to carve trees??? (Pine spuce maple ect ect ????)"

Like the old days Byron mentioned, Jan - first find a tree (Pine spuce maple
ect ect ????), Cut tree, sharpen carving tools and knives, then carve away
everything that does not look like a tree.
