Maura,
"Spit and Whittle" in my mind would be sitting on the front
porch whittling and spitting watermelon seeds or tobacco juice or whatever
off the edge. A relaxed time to whittle and share those tall stories. For
the Lancaster County WoodCarvers' Festival "Spit and Whittle" was the room
Fox Chapel Publishing / Woodcarving Illustrated had at the Lancaster County
Woodcarving Festival where attendees were encouraged to come and whittle and
share stories. The Club had some demonstrations lined up for the room like
Jim Sebring demonstrating and helping others do his tramp art, and Jack
Kochan sharing about power carving (mirco ) and Fox Chapel had Jan Orgema
there sharing carving with children of all ages. Chris Lubkemann was also
there for a short time doing his twig carving. It was a popular spot. Hope
Fox Chapel will work with us to do it again next year! Thanks to Shannon
Flowers for taking the initiative!

I have heard the phrase "spit and whittle" many times but have never had the
opportunity to see or be involved in one. Can anyone enlighten me?
Sorry for your troubles Mike. There always seems to be one in every crowd.
I always said the best part of carving for me was the wonderful, friendly
and helpful people I met along the way. I had one guy in my parks dept
class who always thought that I was his personal tutor. He would monopolize
my time to the dismay of myself and my other people. He was very arrogant
and pushy, although on his way to being a great carver. One day I had to
cancel at the start of the class due to car trouble on route. Everyone was
there waiting for me but they all understood and began to carve amongst
themselves and have fun and made due without me, except for Roberto. He
threw a huge foul mouth fit, insulting and scaring all my good people. It
went on for about 20 minutes until he was asked to leave by the centers
security staff. When I heard what he had subjected my people to, I was
livid but I absolutely refused to call him. He never came back. I and my
students have been so much happier since. Funny how it only takes one to
disrupt an otherwise good time. Hopefully your problem person will also
disappear off the face of the earth.
