Hi Merrilee,
Yes you can stain or color or both anything that you like before you put the wood hardner on. It just can't be touched up afterwards if the sign starts to fade a little.

Hi Karen,
Could you put the finish (paint - stain- etc) on first (after the carving is finished that is) then put the wood hardner on? I just saw that at the hardware store. Funny that you mentioned it :)

when your done with the carving you seal the wood with wood hardner it should last a very long time. I have used it on many items I have turned that have had termite damage, wormholes,etc only downside is that you are stuck with is that nothing will go over the top of wood hardner or none that I know of.
