Well, I was holding my tongue until Tom spoke up. I am not a fan of
expensive sharpening systems. I gave away two different water
grinding systems and have an assortment of "high tech" felt and fiber
wheels gathering dust. They were all too slow. I use an angle
grinder clamped into a vice with speed control for grinding. I slow
it way down and keep a bead of water on the edge of the tool to keep
it cool. When the water evaporates, I get a new bead. It's very fast
to re-grind this way. You have to have a steady hand but I'm sure
you could rig a jig. I then take it to a cotton stropping wheel that
is stiffened by stitching close to the outer edge. It came that way.
Some cotton wheels flap all over the place and wont work. It's
mounted to a mandrel with an old washing machine motor. I use green
honing compound. My wife is a jeweler and I've tried all of the
jewelry compounds. Some are too coarse and some too fine. The green
stuff is the best!

My two cents worth.

take a look!
