I am a professional carver (earn all or most income from carving).
I don't have a written business plan but have always followed a plan
that I learned when I apprenticed at a professional woodcarving
studio. I have modified it over the years through trial and error.
Some of you may know, from my other posts, that I tend to go my own
way and find unconventional ways to approach problems. I use trial
and error as my best learning tool. What works for one woodcarver,
working in a particular style, in a certain geographic area may not
work for others. One thing to keep in mind when selling or pricing
your work is where the piece will end up. If it will be tucked away
in someone's home, out of sight, you may want to charge a higher
price than you would charge for a piece that would be displayed in a
public place. This is not gouging the private owner; it's giving a
discount to the person displaying it in public for marketing
purposes. Word of mouth is one of the best marketing tools that
works for me.

Be sure to look at the incredible nature inspired art jewelry hand
fabricated by my wife, Karen Olsen Ramsey. It's worth the time to
take a look!
