matt,
i purchased one and have
good luck with it the only thing i do not like is that it goes only one direction so not real good for knives but otherwise it has the advantage to your whole shop not just carving.
have had good luck free hand. bythe way i do not like the leather disc for my carving tools
i like to do the final polish on justthe back of a notepad.

The fine folks that brought us the Drill Doctor (which does work) now have something called Work Sharp. Glass disks onto which you slap standard abrasive disks, a slotted wheel for non-flat tools, etc.
Has anyone used this yet? Looks interesting for flat tools, but not too sure about knives and curved tools. Video here: http://www.worksharptools.com/pilot.asp?pg=ws3000vid
